Vibrant Elderhood

MENTORING

You could be enjoying life more,
with less effort,
if you had the right tools.

And you'd be helping humanity more, too.

Getting older often looks like slumping into old age, fearful and waiting to die—a victim of the aging process. However, many of us are instead now powerfully redefining aging to include the concept of 'elderhood'.  As vibrant elders, we consciously choose to age with aliveness, curiosity, energy and grace. We use our skills and wisdom in service to our communities with a grateful, loving heart. Our spirits become gentle while our hearts feel the fierceness of our mission.

Will you choose to age with grace, power, skill and passion—while being in service to the world?

"Elders naturally distributed wisdom in tribal and traditional societies. While modern society offers more and better ways to distribute wisdom, elders don't usually take advantage of them.

Why? One reason is they don't realize they're elders. The result is that modern elders often focus on productivity instead of distributing wisdom.

When elders claim their elderhood, they recognize their greatest joys come from telling stories, sharing wisdom and serving their community. Isn't it interesting that these are also the ways we best help humanity? If we didn't naturally do things that help our species, we wouldn't be here. All other living things naturally behave in ways that help their species, too. What do we call our natural behaviors? Fun."

The Blessings of Elders

In traditional cultures, elders have been valued as repositories of wisdom, strength and unconditional love. This is much less the case in a world that worships youth and the acquisition of material objects. There is a hunger in younger people for the grounded, wise grandfather and grandmother energy that only an elder can provide. Elders can be powerful circles of men and women that bless, counsel, and gift younger souls with the wisdom, experience, and lessons they've gathered though the years.

"When I was first introduced to mentoring, I was reticent to take the step. I was jaded from the problems I'd seen with traditional counseling and therapy.

I finally agreed, and as I got deeper into the experience, I saw a spiritual component working like never before.

It took my breath away.

Several years later, I find myself even more connected to this work. So I venture further into the adventure. It has been a journey of healing for me.
